Most gainers get thrown out half full.

Not because they don’t work. Because by week three you can’t face another one.

Pürest Mass is a 5.19 lb mass gainer with a 124 g serve that gives you 453 calories, 25g of protein and 5g of creatine in two scoops, about 19 serves to a tub. That serving size is the whole point, and it is the number nobody reads.

A gainer can print any calorie number it likes. It just has to make the serve big enough to get there. So the number on the front and the amount of powder you have to get down are the same decision — and only one of them is printed big.

  • 453 Calories
  • 25g Protein
  • 75g Carbs
  • 5g Creatine

That’s a serve you can drink on a Tuesday when you’re not hungry, which is the whole job. The gainer that works is the one you’re still drinking in month two.

Three tubs in one shake.

Protein, carbs and creatine usually come in three separate tubs. You buy three, store three, and measure three every time. Here they are in one scoopful.

Every serve has a full 5 grams of creatine. That is the same amount the tub of creatine on your shelf gives you. So on the days you have a shake, that is a scoop you do not need.

Already take creatine on its own? Skip it on shake days, or use a half serve of this, which gives you 2.5 grams.

Is it just maltodextrin?

No. And the carbs are the reason you’re buying a gainer at all.

75 of the 124 grams in a serve are carbs. That’s not filler, it’s the product. It’s 453 calories you can drink in thirty seconds, on the days when five slices of bread is more than you can face.

Carbs are also the cheapest thing in any gainer and the biggest part of it by weight. So that’s where the money gets saved, and nobody ever reads about it.

Ours is two of them. Both named. Both weighed.

45g Maltodextrindoes most of the work
19.1g SusCarb®the expensive one

Both of them start out as starch — the same stuff that’s in bread, rice and potatoes. That’s all a carb is. Food your body can run on. What makes these two different is the shape the starch is left in.

Maltodextrin is starch cut into short straight bits. It’s cheap, and it’s barely sweet, which is the only reason 75 grams of carbs goes into one shake without it tasting like cordial. It does most of the work here and it’s first on the ingredient list. We’re not going to pretend otherwise.

SusCarb® is the same starch left in the opposite shape. Not cut up small, but left as one big piece with branches going off it in every direction. Less like snapped spaghetti. More like a head of broccoli. It’s the harder one to make, and it costs us several times what maltodextrin costs.

It comes from endurance sport, not from the gym. It was built for sports drinks, and it usually turns up in expensive performance products rather than in gainers. It brings no colour, no smell and no taste of its own. The full name on the label is highly branched cyclic dextrin, and SusCarb® is the brand of it we buy.

We could have put in two grams of SusCarb®, printed the name on the front of the tub, and nobody would ever have checked. We put in 19.1 grams and printed the number next to the name.

Take the tub beside this one off the shelf and see if you can find two carb numbers on it.

Every gram accounted for.

Most gainers ask you to take their word for it. This one prints the working.

  • 25g of protein from eight things, not one: five from milk, plus pea, pumpkin seed and sunflower seed.
  • 5g of creatine a serve, as Pürest Creatine™.
  • Both carbs named and weighed on this page, instead of hidden behind one word.
  • The full amino acid list is in the tab below. What the protein brings and what we added are in separate columns, so you can see which is which.
  • Manufactured in New Zealand from local and imported ingredients.

Read the label. That’s the pitch.

What’s in one serve.

124g, which is two level 150 mL scoops. The full Nutrition Information panel, the actives, the complete amino acid list and the ingredient list are all in the tab below.

That panel is for Creamy Vanilla, the flavour currently on sale. Chocolate’s figures differ slightly, and its own panel goes up when it is back in stock.

Two scoops, thirty seconds.

  1. Put 400–500 mL of cold milk or water in a 700 mL shaker.
  2. Add two level 150 mL scoops. That’s 124g.
  3. Shake for 30 seconds and drink it straight away. One serve a day.

New to gainers? Start on half. One level scoop is 62g, and gives you 12.5g protein, 37.5g carbohydrate and 2.5g creatine. Build up from there.

Powder settles on the way to you, so a scoop can run a little over or under. If you want the serve exact, weigh it.

Is it for you?

Built for

  • Lifters who would rather have protein, carbs and creatine in one shake than in three tubs
  • Anyone whose food can’t keep up with their training
  • Anyone who wants to read exactly what is in their gainer

Not for

  • Anyone lactose intolerant, or allergic to milk or soy. Check the allergen statement first
  • Anyone under 18, pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Anyone already eating enough. You don’t need a gainer if food covers it

Questions people ask before they buy

Will it sit heavy?

It’s a 124g serve in 400–500 mL, so it is a big drink. If you have bounced off gainers before, start on a half serve, one level scoop at 62g, and build up. You can also split a full serve across two smaller drinks in the same day.

I already take creatine. Do I double up?

Each serve has 5g of creatine in it, which is a full dose on its own. If you take a separate creatine, skip it on the days you have a shake. A half serve gives you 2.5g.

How many serves are in a tub?

About 19. One serve is 124g, which is two level 150 mL scoops.

Why is there an expensive carb in a gainer?

Because we would rather put it in than print the name and leave it out. SusCarb® is 19.1g of the 64g of carbs we add. It costs several times what maltodextrin costs, and the amount is printed so you can check it.

Do I need a gainer?

Not if your food already covers what you need. This is for the days it doesn’t, when training is heavy and eating enough is the harder job.

Where is it made?

Manufactured in New Zealand, from local and imported ingredients.
